Music has been a big part of my life since I was three years young. Every Sunday, there was a family BBQ. Grandparents, cousins, distant cousins and family friends gathered to enjoy each other’s company. It was a true family affair. Children were at play in the kiddie pool, the adults shared funny anecdotes and danced to salsa and merengue. 80s and 90s Latin music. Because of them, I now have a deep love for this music. It is part of my daily playlists. Most of the time I favor listening to the old stuff rather than what’s on the radio now.
Then at the age of ten, my relationship with all things oldies began. With two working parents, our grandmother was our after-school babysitter. Best. Thing. Ever. She blessed my ears with exquisite music. Opening up my eyes to rock’n roll and soul music. Elvis Presley was her favorite. Wink. Nick at Nite further influenced my love for oldies. Their night lineup dawned I Dream of Jeannie, Laverne & Shirley, Bewitched, I Love Lucy and Happy Days every night. This is how I discovered Blueberry Hill. Thank you, Richie Cunningham.
I’ve found many songs that speak to my heart by watching television. Movies. Television series. Even commercials. Music relationships are the best kinds of emotional connections. Moments that tug at your heart. With the ability to make you smile or laugh. Just as you are experiencing that feeling for the first time, again. Somewhere Only We Know by Keane in He’s Just Not that Into You. When Alex shows up desperately at Gigi’s door to profess his love? Gets me every time. Music can make you feel so many things. It has a lot of power.
