Every party. Every birthday. Every holiday. I make this caramel flan. It’s a definite crowd pleaser. Each bite is creamy rich and melts in your mouth.
How to make a caramel flan?
Baking a flan is actually very easy. Your oven does the heavy lifting. Using a flan mold willl secure a beautiful round shape and zero mess!
To make the caramel flan, you need:
- 1 (12 oz) can evaporated milk
- 1 (14 oz) can condensed milk
- 3 large eggs
- 2 teaspoons white sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
For the caramelized sugar:
- 1 cup sugar
- 2 tbsp. water
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees.
Let’s start by making the caramel for the flan.
Set the stovetop to medium high. Dump the cup of sugar with 2 tbsp of water in a small pot. Let it sit for 30 seconds and stir. You will begin to see the caramel forming, continue to stir. Careful not to let it burn.
Pour the caramel in the flan mold. Grab some kitchen mittens, swirl the caramel around the mold. Mittens are important, the caramel is very HOT! Set it aside to make the filling.
Mix the first list of ingredients together in a big bowl in no particular order.
Fill a dutch oven (or an oven safe dish large enough for the flan mold) with water. Enough to submerge the mold halfway. Set your timer for 90 minutes. Let it cool before removing from the dutch oven or baking dish. Place it in the fridge for at least 2 hours.
To transfer, use a table knife around the edge of the mold. This ensures it will not stick. I’ve found the easiest way, is to flip it onto the serving plate.
Instant Pot Flan
Did you know you can also make this in your instant pot? Set it to pressure cooker. Let it do its thing for 25 to 30 mins. When ready, release the steam. Follow the same instructions above.
Enjoy the yummy delight!
