Of all the places you’ve been, which would you like to visit again?
I don’t find myself wishing to revisit places often. The world is big, with so many places to explore, doubling up on a location doesn’t feel right. But there is one little spot.
The city of Portland, Maine.
Named Restaurant City of the Year for 2018 by Bon Appetit, Portland is a little gem of landscapes filled with yummy food.
Portland, Maine Food Tour
- Begin your day at the Tandem Bakery. Two days before leaving, we found this yummy bakery around the corner from our Airbnb. We were repeat customers the following day. I highly recommend the biscuit slathered in butter and blueberry jam. Heaven in every bite.
- There are dozens of restaurants in Portland, Maine. But this next one is a must when visiting. Street & Co. serves amazing food with good customer service. Located on Wharf Street, it is a foodie favorite. You need to reserve weeks before your visit. It’s THAT popular. Danny and I were so pleased with the food, we dined there twice. Thanks to a cancellation. I recommend their pasta dishes.
- Continue walking down the cobble street for drinks at Independent Ice Co. We stumbled on this place after dinner. One of our greatest mistakes. Stop in for a whiskey or five. Who’s counting?
- Calling all shellfish lovers! Available in the Marketplace, you can find Mr. Tuna throughout the city. A mobile sushi bar serving up fresh ingredients wrapped in rolls. I had the sushi trio. When visiting, check out his Instagram for his location.
- On the prowl for craft beer, Danny found Austin Street Brewery. Found in the outskirts of the hustle and bustle of the city center, Austin offers many different ales. Walk over to the neighboring brewery, Rising Tide, for more ales.
- You have to try a Lobster roll in Portland. Or in my case a few. Highroller Lobster Co had the best Maine lobster role in town. Read on all the other rolls I tried to find out why.
- The Shop at Island Creek Oysters. $1 Oysters. Need I say more?
- Order another lobster roll at Portland Lobster & Co. Compliment it with a beer and scenery.
- Go to Luke’s Lobster Portland Pier for drinks. Have drinks at the bar upstairs. Sporting ceiling to floor windows for a breathtaking view of the bay. We sipped on Manhattan’s while watching a New England Patriots game with the locals.
- Heaven for dessert lovers. Made with potatoes, the Holy Donut is a hot spot for tourists. Arrive early to avoid a line. I recommend the maple donut.
- Fries are the number one thing on the menu from Duckfat. There is usually a wait and they don’t take reservations. Visit East Ender right next door for the beautiful craft cocktails while you wait. They are closed until Spring 2021.
- Try the one of a kind lobster roll at Eventide. Brown butter warm lobster meat stuffed in a steamed bun. One of the top rolls out there! Slurp down some oysters while you are there. They are insanely fresh from the Maine waters.
